Instead of just storing boxes in your attic, you can organize your attic space to make it an efficient storage area, thus increasing the usable space in your home. Shaynna Blaze, well known interior designer, who is also dubbed “the Storage Queen” offers some tips for making better use of your attic storage space.
Clean your Attic Space Before Reorganising
Before you begin to organise your attic storage, you should first clean it out and vacuum up the dirt and dust. A clean attic is the first step to getting it all organised. Now you can get inspired about how to make the most of your roof storage space.
Make Use of Height for Storage
Rather than just stack boxes or simply dump items on the floor of your attic, consider setting up shelving to take advantage of vertical space. Taking measurements is important here to avoid problems and maximise your storage capacity. By measuring every nook, eave and narrow space, you can figure out how to put your shelving together in a way that takes full advantage of the space available.
Use Proper Storage Containers
Cardboard boxes are not ideal for long term storage; they have a tendency to tear and crumple, providing poor protection for your valuables. Picking up boxes only to have the bottom fail and all its contents fall on the floor is the worst. This scenario is common because the adhesive tape used to hold it together can come apart over time. Instead of cardboard boxes, you should invest in plastic storage containers. Using sealable plastic containers will protect your stored items from exposure to moisture and other damage far better than cardboard.
For maximum storage efficiency, find identical containers that exactly fit your shelving and stack neatly on top of each other. Grouping your storage items together in the same container, and store similar item containers in the same area, will make finding them much easier than distributing similar items in different places.
Set Up a Labeling System
Not many of us have a photographic memory, so if you want to be able to find anything in storage, you’ll need to set up a labelling system. Putting labels on the outside of your storage containers can save from wasting time opening everything up to take a look inside, making a mess and having to organise it again.
Your labelling regime doesn’t have to be too sophisticated; just a simple description of the types of items can be enough to save you time on searching. If you want to be very thorough with your labelling and easily be able to locate specific items, you could label each box with a letter or number and then have a list in a spreadsheet of al the items in that container for quick and easy reference.
Stumbling around in a dimly lit storage area makes finding things very difficult. Make sure you have all the light you need to be able to read labels and move around safely in your attic. A dark attic isn’t very inviting either, meaning you will probably use it less frequently. Why not let some natural light in by installing one or more skylights?
